Digitalise Youth Project – Trainer Responsibilities and Qualifications

⚡ Powered by the Digital Democracy Initiative

Positive Peace Ethiopia (PPE) is proud to implement the Digitalise Youth Project in Ethiopia, in agreement with CFI, as part of the Digital Democracy Initiative (DDI), launched in 2023 by Denmark, the European Union, and Norway. This initiative empowers young journalists and content creators to strengthen digital civic spaces, combat disinformation, and advocate for digital rights. Our trainers are central to this mission, delivering specialized training and coaching to equip youth with essential skills.

Trainer Responsibilities and Qualifications

PPE’s trainers are vital to the Digitalise Youth Project, working across Addis Ababa and regions like Amhara, Oromia, and Tigray. In partnership with CFI and a consortium led by the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), alongside AfricTivistes, Code for Africa, World Scout Bureau Africa Regional Office, and Kofi Annan Foundation, trainers focus on the Information Environment component, fostering media information literacy (MIL) and digital rights advocacy. Their work adheres to CFI’s ethical principles (non-discrimination, gender equality, freedom of expression) and DDI’s visibility guidelines (e.g., Rockwell/Avenir fonts, YDC color palette, #DigitaliseYouth hashtag). Below are their key responsibilities and qualifications for the training and coaching phases.

Capacity Building Trainings (Completed: Early 2025)

Trainers delivered three intensive 5-day training sessions to empower young journalists and content creators with critical skills. Each session required specific expertise to address Ethiopia’s unique media and civic challenges.

Journalism Fundamentals

  • Responsibilities:
    • Developed and delivered curricula on ethical reporting, storytelling, and digital content creation, tailored to Ethiopia’s media landscape.
    • Ensured content was inclusive and accessible, addressing diverse groups (e.g., women, ethnic/religious minorities, persons with disabilities) using bilingual (English/Amharic) materials and WYDE’s inclusive communication guidelines.
    • Conducted pre- and post-training assessments to measure skill development in ethical journalism principles.
    • Collaborated with PPE’s Local Coordinator to align training with DDI objectives, emphasizing digital civic engagement.
    • Documented sessions with photos and feedback for Youth Democracy Cohort (YDC) channels, incorporating DDI branding (e.g., logo, #DigitaliseYouth hashtag).
  • Qualifications:
    • Advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Journalism, Media Studies, or related field; or equivalent professional experience (minimum 7 years in journalism).
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in journalism, with a focus on ethical reporting and digital content creation.
    • Proven track record of training or mentoring journalists/content creators, particularly youth, in low-resource or developing contexts.
    • Familiarity with Ethiopia’s media landscape, including press freedom challenges.
    • Proficiency in digital content creation tools (e.g., editing software, mobile journalism techniques).
    • Fluency in English; proficiency in Amharic or other local languages (e.g., Afan Oromo, Amharic, and Tigrinya) highly desirable.
    • Commitment to inclusive communication, ensuring non-discriminatory and gender-sensitive content.

Our Commitment

PPE’s trainers are dedicated to empowering Ethiopia’s youth to navigate the digital ecosystem ethically and effectively. By fostering skills in journalism, verification, and human rights reporting, they contribute to a more inclusive and democratic digital space. Their work leverages partnerships with universities, Scouts, and consortium members to ensure sustainability and impact.
